Chatterbox – Highland Park
Tricia and I met some friends at the new Chatterbox Pub in Highland Park and left very impressed. It’s not as cool as the original in Minneapolis, but I’d still definitely go back.
The menu is basically the same with a few new burger/sandwich/wrap additions, and it’s also open everyday for breakfast. They have a real kitchen now in the back, so the whole place doesn’t smell like grease, which is very nice!
The space is huge and very nice, and like the Mpls spot, it’s separated into two sides – bar side and lounge side. The lounge area has booths along the edges and couches in the middle for playing video games. The strangest thing is that the games (Atari, Nintendo, etc) are played on small flat screen TVs. Did you ever think you’d see Zelda being played on a plasma screen? I didn’t!
The bar side has more booths, some free standing tables, and a bar that seats about 25. They have the same beer selection (Chatterbox Lager, Chit Chat Ale, Bubblejack IPA, and a few others), and like in Minneapolis, it’s beer and wine only.
I was a little worried walking in that it would still look like the old Perkins, with just a few changes to make it work for a bar. But they must have cleared the whole space and started from scratch, because it looks great and I couldn’t tell what it used to be, or that it’s still in a strip mall.
Obviously I’ll still go to the original since it was my second home for a few years, but I am looking forward to going back to the Highland Park location, and I hope it does well as I think the owners have created a great restaurant theme.
