Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. The weather is cool and about to get colder, I love the fall colors, and it’s all about comfort food - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie - damn I’m getting hungry, and of course it’s always great to be with family.

Halloween night brought The Mountain Goats to town and my first time seeing them. I can’t say that I’m a huge fan, in that I don’t know all the lyrics, but after the show, I really wish I did. John Darnielle is such a great story teller and song writer, that I think I’m really missing such a major part of his music.
But my favorite part of the band is the idea that such a dorky looking guy, with an odd voice, can be so fun to watch. And I think I enjoyed his between song banter as much as the songs themselves. Telling stories of growing up in the midwest and how it doesn’t snow where he lives now, and about drinking too much because of a bad marriage. He just has a way of telling great stories and making you want to listen.
My favorite song going in was “This Year”, which was the song Tricia and I would listen to quite often during our year of planning our wedding. It was a stressful time, so the line “I am going to make it through this year, if it kills me” was a life saver!
Other songs that I quite enjoyed live were “Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton”, “Hast Thou Considered The Tetrapod”, and “Dance Music”.
I hope when he comes back, it’s at a bigger venue, and I will definitely learn some more lyrics so I can appreciate that part of his songs more.

I brought my camera to the show, but I’m never able to get decent shots at the 400 Bar, so they never turn out. But here are some pictures from the show, taken by tay-lo.
Opening up for The Mountain Goats was the North Carolina (via Iowa) band Bowerbirds, whose set I really enjoyed. The lead singer played acoustic guitar, while the other two played the accordion, violin, small drum kit, and some sort of keys played with the feet. I found this blog, JakeMohan.net, who is a long time friend of the band members from their days in Iowa and Grinnell college. They have been touring with the Mountain Goats all year, which is a pretty sweet gig, but I’d probably go see them again if they came to town on their own.
