Had dinner last night at Pizza Biga, the wood fired pizza place next to the Turtle Bread Co on 48th and Chicago. I’ve wanted to try it for a long time, as my brother loves the place, but we just haven’t been. Tricia and I split the caesar salad and the pizza biga. I’m not sure what it was about the salad, but I just didn’t like it. It didn’t have a whole lot of flavor. The pizza on the other hand was awesome. I can’t find a menu online, and I can’t remember what it all had on it, but I’d highly recommend it. Our friends had the beet and asparagus salad which they really liked, and the margherita pizza that we didn’t like.
For dessert, we stopped in at Pumphouse Creamery which is right next door for some ice cream. I had the sweet cream and homemade oatmeal cookie. It was a little expensive at $4 for a one scoop cone, but it was damn good, and might be my new favorite ice cream shop in Mpls.
Also in the Longfellow Nokomis Messenger, was a report that the condo project on 46th and 46th is on hold. Really? I thought that was kinda obvious seeing that nothing has happened with that site in over two years. Though the story does confirm that the developer has basically killed the project and won’t return calls from the paper. I still can’t believe the mess at that intersection. What should be a welcoming corner for all that cross the Ford Bridge, we’re left with a piece of crap construction site, that makes the whole area look like a joke. Hopefully the whole thing gets scraped and someone will come in and take care of it - though I still think it would be a perfect spot for my restaurant, Sloppy Moe’s, if anyone wants to invest in it.
Via the latest Longfellow Nokomis Messenger, there will be a bike tour of Longfellow to visit historic sites in the area. The two hour tour will start at 10am at the U.S. Bank parking lot on July 19th. It sounds kinda goofy, but might be a good way to learn more about the neighborhood.
I’m Voting Republican
I’m still a little upset and mad that I couldn’t make it to the Rock the Garden show this weekend. Bon Iver, Cloud Cult, New Pornographers, and Andrew Bird. In Minneapolis. Outside. Damn.
At least I can look at pictures, watch video, and read reviews from the event and pretend that I was there. Awesome collection of photos from BeeTour Photography.
While in Kansas City this past weekend for my wife’s family reunion, we had dinner at Carmen’s Cafe in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City. Carmen’s describes itself as having Italian cuisine served with Latin flair, with a menu of tapas, pasta, and other meat and fish based Italian dishes. And judging by our meal, and seeing what other people were eating, it seemed like a place you could keep going back to.
Tricia and I split the Paella Valencia and a tapas order of Shrimp ala Ajillo. The shrimp was good and fairly simple, but the paella was outstanding. I have fond memories of sitting at a street cafe in Madrid, sharing a huge plate of paella with a bunch of HS classmates. I’ll never forget what seemed like an endless supply of the best seafood I’d ever had.
The paella in KC was nowhere near as good, but it was the best I’ve had since then. The plate was packed with beef, chicken, chorizo, and a variety of seafood (clams, mussels, squid, scallops, salmon). By the end, I was so stuffed I couldn’t even think of dessert, even though I really wanted to try their Tiramisu or Spanish Flan.
Freakonomics: What Exactly Concerns Us About Gas Prices?: There’s no doubt that Americans are currently frustrated by high gas prices. And certainly many voters believe that “something oughta be done about it.” But why? Here’s a simple taxonomy of concerns:
Keeping it short and tweet: Non-techies find novel niches on Twitter bandwagon.: “I love Twitter and I hate Twitter. Twitter is really annoying,” Landry said. “Most of what I receive on Twitter is noise, but every now and then, the valuable bits that I get from other people’s lives is worth the price for me.”
MSP Bike Posters: I really want the Greenway Poster

I’ve never felt so cool, and so white, in my life!
Video: Bicycle Anatomy 101: This is an amazing little video put together by Carlton Reid of Quickrelease.tv. It walks you through all of the parts of your bicycle and let’s you know what they are really called (as opposed to “that lever thingy”). (via)
The Indie Look: Sometimes, it takes a minute for visitors to the Destee Nation Shirt Company in Seattle to understand the common theme linking the wide array of T-shirts on sale. Many have a vintage look and seem to advertise businesses from a bygone era, or to offer made-up riffs on such advertisements — a faux faded logo for Blue Moon Burgers, the dubious-sounding Tractor Tavern and so on. But each has a tag attached, giving the story of each business, as well as its address. “Then it hits them,” says Matt Morgan, the founder of Destee Nation. “These places are all real.”
We stopped in at Destee Nation last week while we were in Seattle, and I was very impressed with the place. It was hard to only pick one, but I ended up getting this one from Red Hook Brewery.
Obama and McCain Tax Proposals: According to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are both proposing tax plans that would result in cuts for most American families. Obama’s plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy.
