Minneapolis and Saint Paul Raids | MNpublius.com: Police raids, in cooperation with the FBI have been occurring across Minneapolis and Saint Paul since about 9:00 P.M. last night. Most if not all of them appear to be related to individuals and groups related to protesting and causing harm during the Republican National Convention. This story continues to develop and there’s a lot yet to shake out. Either way, this is going to be a big story.

The UnConvention: Republicans are coming. Make an Effort.
Longfellow Community Council board meeting, Aug. 20 | The Bridge: Vice Lords Activity in Longfellow: Schiff reported that Longfellow residents have expressed concern about groups of boys wearing red shirts and black shorts gathering around a house on 30th Avenue near 32nd and 33rd Streets. Schiff photographed graffiti on a fence two blocks west of Longfellow Park. Minneapolis police gang specialists identified the tag as belonging to the Vice Lords gang. Because of past crackdowns, Schiff told the board, most Vice Lords leaders are in jail. That and the fact that the Vice Lords have historically been associated with the north side of Minneapolis lead police to believe that, if a cell is forming in Longfellow, it is still in its infancy. “We very much want to visit their parents,” said Schiff of suspected gang members, “and start intervention.” Schiff encouraged residents to report groups of youths in red and black gang colors and graffiti featuring a backwards cane or top hat and the letters IVL, which stands for insane vice lords.
David Pogue: Toyota Prius: The Debate Continues: Since my post yesterday about the complex eco-calculus of the Toyota Prius, my e-mail box has been flooded. Lots of it is very supportive (thanks!), but the usual anti-Prius diatribes, perpetuating already-debunked Prius myths, are in there too.
Since everyone else is posting it, I guess I should as well, though I better post something else soon so it doesn’t make me sick all day!

Last weekend I went to the Star Wars Exhibit at the Science Museum of MN with some friends. Had a blast seeing all of the costumes, models and props from the movies, but was a little bummed that they didn’t have anything for Jabba the Hut. Also watched the Omnitheater movie on Special Effects, which explains some of the tricks used in movies like Star Wars, King Kong, and Independence Day. It was very interesting, but the kids in our group got a little freaked out by the enormity of the big screen.
More pictures from Eric, who went on the same day, but at a different time.
Taste of Lake Street is on Saturday, September 13th, at the corner of East Lake St and Elliot. Tickets are $25, and food vendors include Pizza Luce, Maria’s Cafe, Town Talk Diner, Hamdi Restaurant, Los Andes, El Nuevo Rodeo, and a lot more. There will also be live entertainment by local artists, but the lineup hasn’t been announced - my guess is that it will be a wide variety of world music.
There will also be beer and wine tastings, and all proceeds go to Minneapolis food shelves
Anyone that knows me knows that Lake Street is my favorite Street in all of Minnesota. I love everything about it, from the “hip and trendy” in Uptown to the immigrant communities near Midtown to my neighborhood hear the Mississippi River - it has it all. And this event looks to be a wonderful celebration of that. (via)
Transcript - Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Democratic Convention Speech: Now, with an agenda like that, it makes perfect sense that George Bush and John McCain will be together next week in the Twin Cities, because these days they’re awfully hard to tell apart.
Zing! I’ve become more of a Hillary fan during the last few months of her campaign, and really enjoyed her speech last night - not as much as Michelle Obama’s the night before, but I doubt anyone will top that one.
DNC: The Twitter National Convention: The Democratic National Convention holds the honor of being the first presidential convention featuring Twitter, the microblogging site launched in 2006. Many prominent journalists, bloggers, and tech-savvy people are using Twitter to share their thoughts in fewer than 141 characters. Here are some of the more interesting observations, or “tweets,” on the Democratic National Convention that have been published so far.
Also, follow the search results for #DNC08 on Twitter. It was pretty cool to watch hundreds of reactions fly by during last night’s speeches.
Making The Wire: The HBO series The Wire, a panoramic view of Baltimore through its drug world, schools, government, seaport, and newspaper, has been widely acknowledged as one of the greatest television dramas ever produced. To mark the release of the final season on DVD, the Museum of the Moving Image presented a panel, Making “The Wire”. (via)
“According to Wikipedia, The Wire is Obama’s favorite show, and Omar is his favorite character.” - Awesome.
