Mother’s Day Race for the Cure

Yesterday morning my family met up at the Mall of America for the annual Race for the Cure walk for breast cancer research. Over 50,000 people registered for the walk, making it the second largest walk in the country (so I’ve heard). My mother was diagnosed ten years ago this year and thankfully she is perfectly fine now. But the walk is a reminder of the nearly 40k women that die from it every year.

Here are my pictures from the walk, and some others by anglerove

The day started out with questions about the weather, there was a chance of rain and it was going to be cold. So we layered up and brewed some coffee and headed over to the light rail. The trains were packed but we could get on, even with the loads of families with stroller and wagons.

We walked three miles around the MOA area, which, with the crowds and the bathroom breaks, ended up taking about 3 hours. By the time we got back to the MOA, we were near the end of the pack, so most had left the area which meant we missed a lot of the freebies.

After the walk, the family headed back to my house to grill and enjoy some lovely treats from the cupcake lady.

Flat Earth Bottle Recall: Dear Flat Earth Believers, we are bummed to announce that we have recently pulled all of our bottled beer products from retail shelves. Our beer is still available on draft in fine pubs and restaurants. This is in response to a quality control concern with a small number of bottles that have failed on store shelves. We are currently still determining the exact cause of these failed bottles but we have ruled out any contamination at our brewery…

Last.fm + YouTube Mashup - this is so very cool, just put in your last.fm username and it creates a video playlist based on your music. A lot of live videos and other clips that I hadn’t really seen before. I’m a fan. (via)

Cycling in the city: Bike culture in the City of Lakes isn’t just about transportation — it’s a movement, run by a growing community of people who are dedicated to a number of open-ended causes: the environment, healthy living and social justice. The goal of nearly any bike enthusiast is to inspire others to ride and enjoy the benefits of cycling through our gorgeous city.

Citizen Cafe: Michael and Seaen MacKay will be opening the Citizen Cafe this Spring in the former Sweet Lorraine’s on 24th Ave S. “We saw an opportunity with Sweet Lorraine’s and felt that the neighborhood was a good fit for us,” Michael MacKay said. “We live in northeast Minneapolis and are very active in the Sheridan neighborhood. We hope to continue that tradition in our new second home.” Michael is the former chef from the Sample Room and reports that Citizen Café will be serving a menu of American cuisine prepared fresh daily that will include breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I’m sad to see Sweet Lorraine’s close, but excited for another dining option in the neighborhood.

3 Squares opens in Maple Grove: The gang behind 3 Squares is Blue Plate Restaurant Company, the one who mastered the urban diner concept with Highland Grill, Edina Grill, Longfellow Grill, and the burger and beer lovin’ Groveland Tap. This looks to be its first ex-urban joint and definitely has a softer, less edgy feel to it.
