Making The Wire: The HBO series The Wire, a panoramic view of Baltimore through its drug world, schools, government, seaport, and newspaper, has been widely acknowledged as one of the greatest television dramas ever produced. To mark the release of the final season on DVD, the Museum of the Moving Image presented a panel, Making “The Wire”. (via)

“According to Wikipedia, The Wire is Obama’s favorite show, and Omar is his favorite character.” - Awesome.

The lives of Barack Obama: An interactive timeline: There are at least two versions of Barack Obama’s life: There’s his version - the story he tells in his speeches, op-eds, and books. Then there’s the media’s version - news articles, columns, and investigative pieces about him as he rose to prominence and since his presidential campaign began. We can learn a lot by comparing the two.

Pool Report for Obama Visit to the Copper Dome: Another couple were baseball fans and asked him if [he] was for the Twins or the White Sox. “If you think I’m going to throw my White Sox under the bus because I’m here in Minnesota, that’s not going to happen,” he said.

Obama and McCain Tax Proposals: According to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are both proposing tax plans that would result in cuts for most American families. Obama’s plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy.

Democrats & Liberals:: Obama’s Urban Policy: Obama will create a White House Office of Urban Policy to develop a strategy for metropolitan America and to ensure that all federal dollars targeted to urban areas are effectively spent on the highest-impact programs. The Director of Urban Policy will report directly to the president and coordinate all federal urban programs.

Obama in St. Paul

Last night’s Barack Obama event in St. Paul was one for the ages. A reported 17,000 filled the Xcel Energy Center while another 15-20,000 watched from outside as he announced his nomination.

Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.

Brian and I arrived downtown early enough while the line was still fairly short, but we decided to grab dinner and a beer at Great Waters before standing in line, figuring that we’d get in no matter what, so we may as well enjoy ourselves. When we were through with our dinner, we walked out and followed the line for at least a mile longer than it was earlier. Oops.

Thankfully, as we were walking we ran into Ed and Kyle and asked if we could hop in with them. The line was probably another two blocks longer at that point, and I’m not sure we would have made it in had we not cut in (thanks again guys!). Don’t vote for Kyle and Ed’s pictures from last night

Like at the Target Center earlier this year, the line moved really quickly once they opened the doors, and luckily, Barack and Michelle were just taking the stage as we walked in.

It was a little hard to hear from where we were standing, but Obama seemed to rock his speech, like he always does. Here is the full text of it (video available here). He talked about healthcare, the economy, education, the environment, and a few nice jabs (as well as compliments) of McCain.

So I’ll say this - there are many words to describe John McCain’s attempt to pass off his embrace of George Bush’s policies as bipartisan and new. But change is not one of them.

I’m really glad we went last night, as it marked such an important time for this election, as we can hopefully all move forward to electing Barack Obama later this year.

An hour and a half with Barack Obama - Smart, normal, curious, not radical, and post-Boomer.

Michelle Obama Takes to the Trail: “In the beginning, she had significant questions about an Obama candidacy. She pressed advisers for a blueprint of how the campaign would raise money and compete with Mrs. Clinton and other candidates. She gave her approval after seeing a concrete plan presented in strategy meetings in late 2006, all of which she attended.”

I am becoming more and more of a fan with every article I read and every video I watch of her. while Hillary is the old generation of a powerful woman, Michelle is the new. There is no question that she is a woman, and that she was able to get to where she is by just being herself.

What are the main differences between Obama and Clinton’s healthcare proposals? A great question was asked on Ask Mefi, with the basic answer being that “Hillary’s plan being more regulatory (we’re going to give everybody health care) and Obama’s being more free market (if it’s affordable for everybody, everybody will get it)”. But there is a lot of great information here explaining both plans - both personal opinions and those of economists.

Another great point being made is that Obama’s plan might be easier to get passed, since he might be able to convince the Right that it’s about letting the free market decide, where Clinton’s plan feels more like Socialism. And that either plan will most likely be watered down before any of it passes anyway.

Good friend Chris is back to blogging with two good posts. First he finally posts his Top Albums of 2007, which he did an excellent job with, writing short descriptions for his top 25, starting with Emma Pollack and ending with Of Montreal. Next he writes about the Obama event in Seattle and caucusing for the state of Washington. Welcome back to blogging, now just keep up with it!
